Letters regarding donations to the National Theatre Museum
Constanța Demetriade to Eugenia Zaharia, pre-1957
Eugenia Zaharia to Zaharia Stancu, 1964
Description:
- Two handwritten letters on notebook paper, written in ink, from different periods.
- The letters concern stage costumes that, through the goodwill of the actress Eugenia Zaharia, came to the museum’s collection.
- Not for all the objects in the museum’s collection can the path by which they arrived in the collection and the people who made this possible be deciphered in detail.
- In this case, we propose two letters that record the journey of some stage costumes that belonged to Constanța Demetriade and her husband, Aristide Demetriade.
- The first letter is written by Constanța Demetriade herself, in which she proposes to the actress Eugenia Zaharia the purchase of the costumes, which she is hard to part with, pushed by the difficult situation she is in.
- The second letter, signed by Eugenia Zaharia and addressed to the writer Zaharia Stancu, director of the National Theater Bucharest (between 1946-1952 and 1959-1969), certifies the donation of the two purchased costumes to the museum, in 1964.
Condition:
- The paper support is extremely fragile and presents: multiple fractures, stains caused by humidity with pigment migration, pigmentations caused by past biological attack, ink solubilizations, slightly adherent deposits and agglomerations of deposits on some areas.

Letter 1
- [Date and place]
Dear Madam Eugenia Zaharia,
I am writing to you today with a heavy heart, but also with a great hope. I am forced to sell some of my most cherished possessions, including the stage costumes that I wore during my career as an actress.
These costumes are not just pieces of clothing. They are memories of the roles I played, the people I worked with, and the audiences I entertained. They are a part of my history, and it is with great sadness that I must part with them.
However, I know that they will be in good hands with you. You are a talented actress with a deep appreciation for the arts. I am confident that you will cherish these costumes as much as I have.
I am asking for [amount] for the costumes. I know that this is a lot of money, but I believe it is a fair price for the value and history of these items.
I would be grateful if you would consider my offer. If you are interested, please let me know as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
Constanța Demetriade
Letter 2
- [Date and place]
Dear Mr. Zaharia Stancu,
I am writing to you today to inform you of a recent donation to the museum’s collection.
In 1964, I purchased two stage costumes from the actress Constanța Demetriade. These costumes belonged to her and her husband, Aristide Demetriade, both of whom were renowned actors.
I am donating these costumes to the museum in the hope that they will be preserved and displayed for future generations to enjoy.
I believe that these costumes are an important part of Romanian theatrical history. They represent the work of two talented actors and the many roles they played on stage.
I am confident that the museum will be a good home for these costumes. I am grateful for your support of the museum and its mission to preserve and promote Romanian culture.
Sincerely,
Eugenia Zaharia
